SUNY Erie Library Resource Center Budget Update : Home

Electronic Resources Cancellations and Kanopy Changes

Dramatic, unsustainable annual increases (at an average rate of 4% to 5%) in the cost of obtaining scholarly resources, both in print and electronic, have created a crisis for our collection of library resources. This crisis has been compounded by the uncertain status of this year’s budget. Library resource cancellations are impactful to students and faculty; however, the status quo is unsustainable, and the library needs to be proactive in this situation to ensure continued access to our users’ most essential resources. We want you to be aware of planned changes to our electronic collection for this year so that you can make any necessary preparations.

Planned Electronic Resource Cancellations by Date

Literary Reference Center Plus (Expired 10/31/19) – Alternative library resource is available through Literature Resource Center

New England Journal of Medicine site license (Expired 10/31/19) – Alternative access available through our Proquest Nursing and Allied Health database (3 month delay). ***11/18/19 UPDATE: Though SUNY Erie will no longer be contributing to its funding, access to this shared SUNY resource will continue this year thanks to funding by 37 SUNY Libraries.***

Artstor (Expires 12/31/2019) – Low usage. No alternative available currently.

The Chronicle of Higher Education site license (Expires 6/30/2020)  Alternative access available through our Academic Search Complete database (1 month delay) and the library’s print subscriptions.

Credo Reference (Expires 8/1/2020)  Alternative library resources available through Gale Virtual Reference Library and Britannica Academic.

Additional Electronic Collection Changes

Kanopy – The library will continue to provide access to Kanopy; however, we will be changing the nature of the access provided to a moderated system from the current on demand system after our initial cost threshold is met. Faculty may request licensing of Kanopy streaming films to replace videos as part of course assignments. Clubs and other student organizations may also request licensing of videos to support their activities. The library will not purchase Kanopy videos for individual recreational viewing.

Obviously, any in-semester change of this nature is not ideal. We will work with faculty who are using Kanopy as part of their curriculum to ensure that films are available for classes and minimize the impact of this necessary change.

ScienceDirect (Expires 12/31/2019) – SUNY Erie receives heavily subsidized access to ScienceDirect through a SUNY system-wide contract with its publisher Elsevier. The current SUNY contract expires December 31, 2019. SUNY is currently negotiating an extension, but other recent system-wide negotiations with Elsevier have not gone well.

Moving Forward

It may be necessary to add additional electronic resources to the list of planned cancellations after the Spring semester budget disbursement. The current planned cancellations were selected after a comprehensive review of usage, cost, and available alternatives. Please contact the library leadership team with any questions or concerns regarding these planned cancellations. We appreciate your continued support.
