A pan-northern push for local control challenges Western approach to saving species at risk

Indigenous peoples are often marginalized and face discrimination in countries’ legal systems, leaving them even more vulnerable to violence and abuse. Indigenous human rights defenders who speak out face intimidation and violence, often supported by the state. In addition, individuals may be physically attacked and killed just for belonging to an Indigenous people.

This lesson helps students understand how pollution disproportionately affects people who are poor and members of racial and ethnic minorities as well as use a map to locate environmental injustice.

Students will learn how air pollution affects people of color and those living in poverty and will use a map to locate environmental injustice.

The Hip Hop Caucus and its partners will present the “We Shall Breathe” virtual summit. This digital event will examine climate and environmental justice, connecting the climate crisis to issues of pollution, poverty, police brutality, and the pandemic, all within a racial justice framework.

This project is focused on creating full-text transcriptions of manuscripts dating 1625-1893. This type of work can be more involved and takes a little time. However, you only need to transcribe as much (or as little) as you like. Among then information that can be gathered from this document includes Maine's land use, attitudes towards the environment and their obligations to the Wabanaki People.

The Building Detective For Disaster Preparedness project is a part of the Building Recognition using AI at Large-Scale (BRAILS) project, which intends to learn the vulnerabilities of buildings to natural hazards using machine learning and deep learning. While the occurrence of natural hazards cannot be precisely predicted, their impacts on buildings and infrastructures are fairly well understood. Damages and losses can be minimized with effective management and hazard mitigation planning.

Lead poisoning is a big problem throughout Buffalo, however those who live in older, less well maintained building are more likely to suffer it's effects. These tend to be poorer communities of color and recent immigrants. The fact that lead poisoning in early childhood can lead to cognitive difficulties and impulse control problems, which in turn results in perpetuating cycles of poverty among these communities.
