While the background and context of the book is the current crisis in the American automobile industry, the focus is on Kokomo, home to three generations of autoworkers. This is the story of the union leaders, the salaried plant managers, the elected local officials as well as ordinary citizens of the town. In telling their story, the authors succinctly explain how the Detroit autombobile industry stumbled and how this affected millions of people in the US, Canada and Mexico. The populist narrative is ultimately an exhortation to save the stumbling industry.
A Profile of the Global Auto Industry by
This is the first book on the global auto industry viewed through the lens of technology. It starts by tracing how innovation shaped the first century of its history, then it examines the industry's shifting footprint in Europe and North America, and the rise of new producers, particularly China. Succeeding chapters emphasize the role of suppliers in what is now a high-tech industry. This book describes new forms of collaboration that challenge traditional supply chain relations, analyzing regulation as a driver of innovation, and the enabling role of the materials science revolution, such as the shift of steel from a commodity to a highly engineered product. Stealing Cars by
As early as 1910 Americans recognized that cars were easy to steal and, once stolen, hard to find, especially since cars looked much alike. Model styles and colors eventually changed, but so did the means of making a stolen car disappear. Though changing license plates and serial numbers remain basic procedure, thieves have created highly sophisticated networks to disassemble stolen vehicles, distribute the parts, and/or ship the altered cars out of the country. Stealing cars has become as technologically advanced as the cars themselves. John A. Heitmann and Rebecca H.
