What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is an access management platform that SUNY Erie Libraries are using to update how students, faculty and staff access the libraries' electronic resources.

OpenAthens is more secure and reliable, and should resolve the problems that some users have experienced accessing resources off campus.

What will change?

Students, faculty and staff are now required to use their SUNY Erie credentials to access the library's resources regardless of whether they are on or off campus. This should be seamless if you are already logged into SUNY Erie's Single Sign-on (SSO) process.

Your username and password will not change to use OpenAthens.

Why is the library making this change?

Moving to OpenAthens from our current product provides the college with more online security as OpenAthens is hosted and supported by EBSCOhost. This allows for a more secure sign-on process and should reduce the amount of times faculty, staff, students need to sign in to resources from off-campus.

It will also provide the libraries with better usage data for making decisions regarding database subscriptions and to conduct student assessment.

Faculty Information

To ensure your students can access any library materials you have linked in your BrightSpace D2L or Open Educational Resource (OER), faculty must update their links to the material so that the OpenAthens link is active. Access from the current link will stop working as the library fully transitions to OpenAthens before Fall 2022.
